Bulk Oil and Solids Removal
Primary bulk oil and solids separation is a critical process in the treatment of produced water and wastewater streams. The objective is to efficiently remove large volumes of oil and suspended solids to improve water quality and reduce the load on downstream treatment systems.
The process typically involves a combination of gravity-based and mechanical separation methods, designed to exploit differences in density, particle size, and hydrodynamic behavior between water, oil, and solids.
Gravity Separation includes:
- 2 and 3 phase separators
- API 420 Separators
- Gun Barrel or Vertical Tanks
Cyclonic Separation:
- Deoiling Hydrocyclones
- Desandiers
- Centrifuges
Flotation/ Colloidal Gas Aphron
Flotation is a widely used separation technique in produced water and wastewater treatment for the removal of oil, grease, and suspended solids. The process involves the introduction of gas (commonly air) into the water stream to generate fine bubbles that attach to contaminants, causing them to rise to the surface for easy removal.
Omega H2O offers a unique flotation process that utilizes Suspended Air Flotation with colloidal gas aphrons (7-25um) to inject a myriad of microbubbles into the process stream. Microbubble stabilization due to an electrostatic charge on the gas aphrons and high gas droplet surface area creates exponential contacting potential, producing superior separation performance for removing oil and suspended solids from process water. The Suspended Air Flotation process is specifically designed to enhance contact between the charged microbubbles and the material to be removed.
Advantages
- Higher Flow Rate per surface area
- Lower chemical consumption
- More efficient contaminant removal
- Higher air/gas volume (40%) than traditional methods

UF/NF
A walnut shell filter is a robust and efficient technology designed for the removal of oil, grease, and suspended solids from process water streams. The system utilizes a bed of crushed black walnut shells as the filtration medium, capitalizing on their unique physical and chemical properties. Process water is passed through a filter bed composed of black walnut where oil and solids are captured on the shell surfaces through adsorption and filtration, while clean water exits the system. Periodic backwashing removes the accumulated contaminants, regenerating the filter media for continuous operation.
Advantages of Black Walnut Shells
- High Oil Absorption Capacity and Durability
- Black walnut shells have a naturally oleophilic surface for enhanced oil removal while also being resistant to degradation, ensuring long term performance
- Environmentally Friendly:
- As a natural and renewable material, walnut shells offer an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic filter media
- They are biodegradable and can often be repurposed or disposed of with minimal environmental impact
- Chemical Resistance:
- Walnut shells are resistant to a wide range of chemicals, making them suitable for diverse water compositions, including produced water with harsh conditions
- Compact System Design:
- Walnut shell filters are compact and require less space compared to other filtration technologies
Desalination and Advanced Treatment
Desalination is the process of removing dissolved salts and impurities from seawater or brackish water to produce fresh water suitable for human consumption, agriculture, or industrial use. It is a vital technology for addressing water scarcity in arid regions and coastal areas.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) in Desalination
Reverse osmosis is a widely used desalination method where water is forced through a semipermeable membrane under high pressure. The membrane blocks salts and impurities, allowing only fresh water to pass through.
- Advantages: High efficiency in salt removal, modular design for scalability, and suitability for various water sources.
- Applications: Drinking water supply, industrial processes, and wastewater recycling.
Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) in Desalination
Reverse electrodialysis is an emerging technology that uses ion-selective membranes to exploit salinity gradients between seawater and freshwater, generating electricity or driving desalination processes.
- Advantages: Potential for energy recovery and integration with renewable energy sources, lower operational costs in specific applications.
- Applications: Energy-efficient desalination and hybrid systems for power generation
